Date: 27/02/1404
Sources: Taliban closed 200 UNICEF‑Supported Community Education Classes in Panjshir
Local sources in Panjshir have told Amu that the Taliban have closed 200 community‑based education classes that were operating in the Province with the support of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
According to these sources, these classes served around 5,000 students both girls and boys and more than 200 teachers had been engaged in teaching there.
The sources added that each teacher received a monthly salary of 9,200 Afghanis for their work in these classes, which had been a means of supporting their families.
Based on the information provided, the total monthly salary payout for these teachers amounted to 1,840,000 Afghanis. Given the current severe economic conditions, this income had provided at least some assistance in sustaining the day‑to‑day lives of families in the Province.
It is worth noting that since returning to power, the Taliban have banned education for girls beyond the sixth grade as well as their attendance at universities a policy they initially claimed was “temporary and until further notice.” However, over the past three years, not only has this policy remained unchanged, it has become even more restrictive.
Earlier, sources had also reported that the Taliban closed UN‑supported community schools in Logar, Paktia, and Khost Provinces.
This action by the Taliban has faced strong backlash from the international community and the broader Islamic world, with many calling it contrary to Islamic teachings and based solely on the personal interpretations of individuals within the Taliban, including their leader.
Nevertheless, the Taliban continue to intensify these policies and have now begun shutting down community‑based classes supported by humanitarian organizations across Afghanistan, one after another.

Notes on Decree

This entry documents the closure of approximately 200 UNICEF-supported community-based education classes in Panjshir by Taliban authorities. The classes had served around 5,000 students and employed more than 200 teachers. The closures reflect the continued restriction of alternative and community-based education initiatives operating with international support, further limiting access to education while also eliminating a source of livelihood for local teachers.
