Taliban authorities dismissed female literacy teachers in Kabul and Nangarhar and banned Teachers’ Day observances.

Decree Translation

Date: 13/07/1404
A literacy program teacher in Kabul city, in a voice message sent to Afghanistan International, says that the Taliban dismissed her and a number of other female teachers from their jobs on Sunday, the 13th of Mizan. The 13th of Mizan coincides with World Teachers’ Day; however, the Taliban have banned the observance of World Teachers’ Day in Afghanistan.
Earlier, Afghanistan International, citing an official document, reported that the Taliban’s Education Directorate in Nangarhar had also reduced the positions of 90 female teachers in literacy schools and dismissed them from their jobs.

Notes on Decree

This entry documents the dismissal of female literacy teachers in Kabul by Taliban authorities, as reported by local sources. A literacy program teacher stated that she and other female colleagues were removed from their positions, coinciding with 13 Mizan (World Teachers’ Day), which the Taliban have banned from being observed. Similar reductions and dismissals of female literacy teachers were previously reported in Nangarhar Province. The measure reflects the continued contraction of women’s employment in the education sector, particularly within literacy programs, and the broader restriction of both women’s access to work and the provision of education to adult women
