Banned music at wedding halls in Herat, warning of punishment for violators.

Decree Translation

In the video clip, an official from the Ministry of Virtue and Vice is stating that wedding hall owners must not allow music anymore in Herat. And he said that wedding at music ceremonies unlawful and will be punished if it continues.

Notes on Decree

This directive is part of a broader Taliban effort to impose a monolithic religious-cultural code, using state power to suppress artistic expression and joy in personal life events. Banning music at weddings—an occasion where music is traditionally essential in Afghan society—not only silences a vital cultural form but also contributes to the Taliban’s ongoing repression of art, individuality, and joy in public and private life. These restrictions constitute a clear violation of cultural and expressive freedoms, and deepen the atmosphere of surveillance and fear even in family celebrations.
