Wasima Kohistani in an interview with Anisa Shahid: "The Taliban arrested and tortured me on charges of recording and broadcasting images of Arzo Kohistani, who had been raped by the former head of the eleventh district criminal department in Kabul. They pulled out my nails and placed me naked in dirty water."
This case exemplifies how the Taliban regime reportedly uses extreme violence—including sexualized torture—as a method of silencing dissent and suppressing information about internal abuses, particularly related to sexual violence. The targeting of Wasima Kohistani for reporting on the rape of Arzo Kohistani demonstrates a systemic pattern of not only impunity for perpetrators within the Taliban’s ranks but active persecution of those who seek justice. The treatment described constitutes torture under international law and reflects broader repression of women and freedom of expression under Taliban rule.
Wasima was subjected to torture in custody, including the removal of her nails and being forced to sit naked in dirty water—punishment she says was inflicted for exposing the Taliban’s crime. She was accused of being a traitor for recording and sharing Arzo’s testimony.
