Taliban Flog Three Individuals in Nangarhar
Kabul, 8 AM: The Taliban’s Supreme Court has announced that three individuals were flogged in Nangarhar Province.
In a statement released on Sunday, the 12th of Hut (March 2), the court said the individuals were punished on charges of “illicit relationships.”
According to the Taliban’s Supreme Court, all three individuals were sentenced to between one and two years of imprisonment and 39 lashes each.
Despite condemnation from international organizations, the Taliban continue to carry out summary and public punishments across the country.
The public flogging and imprisonment of three individuals in Nangarhar Province reflects the continued use of discretionary corporal punishment by Taliban authorities to regulate private relationships and enforce moral conformity. The imposition of prison sentences alongside 39 lashes for “illicit relationships,” publicly announced by the Supreme Court, underscores the normalization of physical violence as a tool of governance. Implemented through judicial processes lacking independence and meaningful safeguards, the punishment functions as an arbitrary and coercive practice that intrudes into private life, undermines personal autonomy and liberty, and reinforces fear and social control despite sustained international condemnation.
