The Taliban flog a woman and a man in Ghazni:
The Taliban’s Supreme Court announced on Sunday, in an official statement, that a woman and a man were flogged on charges of “moral corruption” in Deh Yak District of Ghazni Province.
According to the statement, the two individuals were each subjected to 39 lashes and were also sentenced to five years of discretionary imprisonmen
The public flogging and imprisonment of a woman and a man in Ghazni Province reflects the continued use of discretionary corporal punishment by Taliban authorities to enforce vague moral norms and assert social control. The imposition of 39 lashes and lengthy prison sentences for “moral corruption,” publicly announced by the Supreme Court, demonstrates the normalization of physical violence and severe penalties for broadly defined moral offenses. Carried out through judicial processes lacking independence and meaningful safeguards, the punishment functions as an arbitrary and coercive practice that intrudes into private life, undermines personal autonomy and liberty, and disproportionately impacts women while reinforcing fear and conformity.
