The Taliban's Supreme Court announced in a statement today (Thursday, June 27) that their forces in Kunar province have lashed and sentenced a man and a woman to imprisonment on charges of having an illicit relationship. According to the Taliban's statement, both the man and the woman received 39 lashes each. In addition, 3 persons also punished in Paktika for illicit relations. The statement did not provide any details about the length of their imprisonment (Rukhshana Media).

The public flogging and imprisonment of individuals for alleged "illicit relations" in Kunar and Paktika provinces reflect the Taliban's continued reliance on corporal punishment without due process.
