Date: 24/05/1444 The Taliban Supreme Court has announced in a press release on its official website that, based on the ruling of the Jawzjan Provincial Court of Appeal and the approval of the Taliban Supreme Court, more than 22 men and women were flogged at the Sheberghan City Sports Stadium on charges of adultery, running away from home, sodomy, smuggling, and theft. This order was carried out in public with the participation of Taliban leadership officials in the province, and each of these individuals received 25 to 35 lashes.
The public flogging of over 22 men and women in Jawzjan province—sanctioned by the Taliban Supreme Court—highlights severe violations of fundamental human rights. These punishments, carried out for offenses such as adultery, fleeing home, sodomy, and theft, bypass internationally recognized standards of due process and constitute cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment.
The use of corporal punishment without transparent legal proceedings or legal representation undermines the right to a fair trial and reflects the Taliban’s removal of judicial protections. The criminalization of private behavior, especially cases like “running away from home,” disproportionately targets women and infringes upon personal autonomy and gender equality.
