Reliable sources in Balkh Province report that broadcasts of the Taliban-controlled national television channel in the province have been suspended. According to Rukhshana Media, the television broadcasts were halted on Tuesday evening, September 9.
Sources stated that the suspension was carried out under pressure from the Department for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice and on the orders of Mohammad Yousuf Wafa, the Taliban governor of Balkh. While television broadcasts have stopped, the radio service of the outlet reportedly continues.
Rukhshana Media added that the suspension has left more than 20 journalists and media workers unemployed and without housing. Taliban authorities have not issued an official announcement. The incident occurs amid a nationwide ban on broadcasting live images, now enforced in at least 20 provinces.
The suspension of national television broadcasts in Balkh demonstrates the Taliban’s continued dismantling of visual media, extending censorship even to outlets under their direct control. By enforcing live-image bans through provincial authorities and virtue policing, the Taliban effectively eliminate television journalism while preserving radio as a more tightly controlled medium. The resulting loss of jobs and housing highlights the direct economic and social consequences of media repression.
