Banned Windows, Silenced Lives

Taliban Ban on Kitchen Windows That Overlook Neighboring Homes

Name: Sonika
Province: Kabul

Before the fall of the country, I was the sole breadwinner for my family, working in a government institution. The day the Taliban took control of Afghanistan marked the beginning of immense hardship for women. One of their first actions was to issue a decree banning women from entering government offices, followed by the elimination of our positions.

As a result, I lost my job, so did my sister and many of my friends. Now, we struggle to afford even our daily meals. The only shelter we have is our small paternal home, which has stood through all our joys and hardships.

Recently, the Taliban issued a new order requiring us to block any windows that overlook a neighbor’s property, even kitchen windows that were built twenty years ago. In a time when we can barely afford basic necessities, how are we supposed to rebuild our homes?
